Craft for the curious - Modular textile tangibles
Iris Nijenhuis is an Amsterdam-based textile artist known for her experimental shapes and structures. Through a self-developed technique, she transforms fabrics into laser-cut modular forms that are carefully assembled by hand, without stitching or glue.
This construction system combines craftsmanship and innovation, allowing each piece to move, adapt, be repaired, and transform into many variations. Her work ranges from bold wearable pieces to sculptural objects, each assembled like a puzzle.
Nijenhuis developed her technique at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, where she explored unconventional ways of constructing textiles. By experimenting with laser cutting, she deconstructed fabrics into interlocking components and rebuilt them into flexible surfaces, creating a living textile language that is adaptable, repairable, and evolving.
Her practice reflects a meditative rhythm and a deep respect for material, balancing precision with play. Driven by curiosity and experimentation, she invites audiences to rethink how textiles can connect and transform.
