BE SQUARE

Erna de Bie is a designer based in Groningen.

During Glue 2026, Erna will be exhibiting her work from her brother’s apartment, who is also a designer. It’s situated on the first floor of a building in the heart of the Red Light District.

The flat will be furnished with both new and older works by Erna, creating a homely atmosphere.

An intriguing use of geometrical structures characterize her works. A conceptual work method based on logic and association, allows for shapes to move freely between her art, furniture, home-accessories and jewellery. From her point of view, this is a natural effect she has fully embraced.

Erna’s mathematically organic objects originate from concepts based on the data of the cube or a plane. Her current works are based on a shape named Fietsenrek, after originally been developed as an ornamental bike stand. The shape, a rearrangement of a cube’s ribs, is versatile and dynamic, in the sense that it changes depending on the perspective. A dynamic composition of lines change into a star, squares, triangles in diamonds and combinations of these shapes.

New - a set of stools; based on Fietsenrek, Erna has experimented with the method and position of the joints. The result is a stool with an intriguing interplay of lines that seems to fit seamlessly into any interior.

Whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit, Erna will tell you about her work if you’d like.

Access is via a steep, narrow staircase – please bear this in mind.
